Civil War Medicine
Grades: 4 – 12 Program fee: $125 Length: 40 minutes
In 1863, little was known about the causes of diseases, how to stop them from spreading or how to cure them. Soldiers had little chance of surviving. Students will meet the battlefield nurse who will demonstrate medical and surgical techniques. Your class will develop an understanding of how many of these techniques have involved into modern medicine.
Civil War Spies
Grades: 4 – 12 Program fee: $125 Length: 40 minutes
Espionage was common during the Civil War. Some of the best spies of the era were women. “Crazy Bet” will let you in on some of her spying methods. Ask her how she and other women spies played a part in changing the course of certain events during the Civil War.
History Mystery: Ghost Stories
Grades: 4 – 12 Program fee: $125 Length: 40 minutes
Some say that Abraham Lincoln haunts the White House. Lincoln’s ghostly legacy is just one history mystery shared in this interactive electronic field trip. Participants are encouraged to use their knowledge of history to question and discuss puzzles about Abraham Lincoln and Merriwether Lewis.
Historic Trades: Meet the Herbalist
Grades: 3 – 12 Program fee: $125 Length: 40 minutes
In the early Village of Huntsville the herbalist was a person of standing. She provided appropriate herbs for every occasion. She recommended herbs for cooking and for your medicinal needs as well as herbs for your bridal bouquet. Join her as she dispenses advice and answers your questions- always infusing a strong dose of humor.
Meet Dr. Mary Edwards Walker
Grades: 2 – 12 Program fee: $125 Length: 40 minutes
Only one woman has ever received the coveted Medal of Honor, the highest award for individuals given by the United States. She was also the only female surgeon commissioned by the US government during the Civil War. Meet the amazing Dr. Mary Edwards Walker and learn about her determination to pursue a medical career. Hear about her experiences as a battlefield surgeon and a prisoner of war in the 1860′s and come to understand the type of character needed to lead the way to reform and receive the Medal of Honor.

This holiday season step back in time and see what Christmas was like in America during the Civil War. Meet an Alabama girl from the year 1864 and experience the holidays as she celebrates them. Explore the differences between celebrations then and now while learning about the origins of some of our favorite traditions.
