The Homeschool History Academy is a selection of programs at the EarlyWorks Museum Complex created just for homeschool students. Each 2 hour session (10am - 12 noon) includes a variety of history-related activities with an emphasis on hands-on fun, drama and interaction. We hope to provide an enrichment experience for your regular studies.
EarlyWorks Academy Classes ($10 per person, age 6 and up; $8 Members)Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012: Iron Chains to Freedom Trains Celebrate Black History Month by discovering the accomplishments of African Americans. Examine the struggle for equality from pre-civil war slavery to the civil rights movement. Explore African American history through musical instruments, artifacts, costumes and games. Follow the history of African Americans from slavery to civil rights. Learn how African culture and beliefs were blended with those of Europeans to create a diverse way of life. Tues, Feb. 21, 2012 Our America Hear about an immigrant’s tale of becoming a citizen, learn about the American flag and other national emblems, test your map skills on the gigantic metal map and learn about our nation’s presidents. Village Academy Classes 10am-12pm $10 per person age 6 and up Tues, Oct 4, 2011 Sticks, Stones and Achy Bones Join the Villagers as they go about such chores as building garden scarecrows, grinding corn, dipping candles, and churning butter. Perhaps your team will win the yoke and bucket race! Be sure to make time to rest a bit and listen to a “moo-ving” Southern tale. Tues, May 15, 2012 History A Foot Enjoy a walking tour of local buildings and learn about local architects who built some of them. Many local buildings also provide examples of the various architectural styles found throughout the state. Tour Constitution Village – an award-winning period reconstruction depicting life in early 19th century Alabama. Depot Academy Classes 10am-12pm $10 per person age 6 and up $8 members Tues, Oct.18, 2011 Civil War Kids’ Encampment This incredible experience will allow students to reenact life as a Civil War soldier. A Civil War encampment will be set up on the grounds of the Huntsville Depot. Costumed interpreters will be on hand to share their knowledge of the War and the hard times experienced by all, as visitors participate in marching and drill practice, battlefield surgery, cooking detail and more! Holiday Season Tues, Dec.6, 2011 2pm-4pm –Storybook Christmas ( Historic Huntsville Depot) 4pm –optional Chik Fil A dinner –Depot- minimum 20 orders at a charge of $5.50 each. 5pm-9pm – Santa’s Village(Alabama Constitution Village) $15 per person Depot/Village family program, plus optional $5.50 dinner charge The evening Santa’s Village admission may be redeemed at a later date of choice. Your visit will include… Storybook Christmas Settle down in front of the fireplace and listen to Mama tell the story of “The Night Before Christmas.” Help the Grinch deliver presents to the residents of Whoville. Step into our “Christmas in the Big Woods” cabin. Take an imaginary trip to the North Pole, as you climb aboard our passenger train car to hear the “Polar Express” story. Do reindeer really fly? Find out in the story the “Wild Christmas Reindeer,” as Teeka works to train them. End your story book adventure by crafting your own holiday souvenir to take home Optional Chik Fil A dinner – Historic Huntsville Depot Santa’s Village – Alabama Constitution Village Enjoy a visit to Huntsville’s magical winter fantasy – the holiday music, twinkling lights, and aroma of hot cider at Santa’s Village. Visit with Santa, and decorate your own yummy cookie. Take a peek at the reindeer, race through the ice maze, and watch out for a snow storm. Santa’s Village is fun for the whole family! |
